What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo (sometimes spelt 'Tae Kwon-Do') is a Korean art of unarmed combat, translated from Korean, 'Tae' literally means to kick or smash with the foot. 'Kwon' denotes a fist with the meaning to punch or destroy with the hand or fist. 'Do' means art, way or method. Taekwondo is the given name to the art of unarmed combat for self-defence, sport or recreation.

To the Korean people Taekwondo is more than the simple use of skilled techniques. It also has a spiritual meaning and provides a guide to a way of thinking and interacting.

In these days of violence and intimidation, which seem to plague our modern societies, Taekwondo enables the individual to possess a fine weapon to defend themselves. When wrongly used it can be a lethal weapon.

The History of Taekwondo

Taekwondo was given its name by its father and founder, retired Major General Choi Hong Hi (9th Degree), on April 11th 1955.
